Bitcoin Hodl Day: Legendary Meme turns 11 years old

Those who believe in the long-term growth of Bitcoin do not sell - even in bad times. That is the meaning of the word "Hodl."

Exactly 11 years ago, on Dec. 18, 2013, one of the most famous memes in the crypto world emerged. Anonymous Bitcoin user "GameKyyubi" wrote a post on the BitcoinTalk.org forum titled "I AM HODLING".

There he told his friend he was in a bar and the Bitcoin exchange rate had collapsed. Despite all the advice to sell, he chose to hold on to his coins.
GameKyyubi explained that he was not a good trader. He excused the misspelling "Hodl" by saying he was drunk at the time.

Later, "Hodl" became short for "Hold On for Dear Life" and means holding on to Bitcoin even when the market is very unstable or performing poorly.
The term has since become a strategy for people who recognize that they are not good at fast trading.

"Hodl" has also led to a similar term, "Buidl," which is often used in the crypto world to talk about the various applications being developed in the blockchain industry.
