Decision made: Microsoft will not include Bitcoin in reserves

A group of Microsoft shareholders wanted to add Bitcoin to the tech company's reserves. A decision has been made. Microsoft will not include Bitcoin in its reserves.

AI, quarterly earnings - and Bitcoin. At Microsoft's annual shareholder meeting, from the perspective of the Bitcoin community, one agenda item in particular took center stage.

A group of shareholders had submitted a proposal on Oct. 25 for Microsoft to include Bitcoin on its balance sheet, following MicroStrategy's lead.

"Unfortunately, in times of persistent and often devastating inflation, a company's financial strength is determined not only by how well it operates, but also by how well it can maintain its profits," the proposal read.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, the decision fell: Microsoft will not include Bitcoin in its reserves. The majority of shareholders voted against the proposal, taking the project off the table.

The decision comes as no surprise. On Polymarket, investors estimate the odds at just 15 percent. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is also known as no friend of cryptocurrencies. In a Reddit-AMA, he called Bitcoin and other crypto currencies "speculative."

Even A presentation by MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor prior to the vote did not change the outcome. Saylor argued that Bitcoin "the greatest transformation of the 21st century" is and called it "digital capital."

An Amazon shareholder group is also trying to get the company to include Bitcoin in its reserves. In a letter, they are asking Amazon's board of directors to consider buying Bitcoin.
