Ethereum founder warns "Single-Issue" voters

Vitalik Buterin calls on the community not to make their political choices based solely on crypto. Contradiction comes from Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin expressed in a blog post his concerns about the current political mood in the crypto sector. In it, Buterin warned against the tendency to base political decisions solely on politicians' pro-crypto stance, so-called "Single-Issue-Voting." In addition, Buterin stressed that the original values of the crypto movement - freedom, decentralization and privacy - are more important than just supporting crypto.

"If a politician is pro-crypto, you have to ask yourself: Is he so for the right reasons?", Vitalik Buterin wrote. "Does he have a vision of the development of technology and politics in the 21st century that matches yours?" the Ethereum founder asked further.

Buterin recommended looking at the crypto stance of the candidates in question from five years ago and weighing whether it has changed - and thus could change again. Buterin's statements follow several pro-crypto statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump. In the run-up to his candidacy for the upcoming election, Trump had been outspoken in his support for Bitcoin and other crypto. However, some people questioned his intentions, as he had spoken out clearly against crypto during his presidency.

Also, Trump's recently appointed running mate, JD Vance, would be friendly to the industry. Therefore, with a change of power following the U.S. elections in November, numerous crypto investors are hoping for a more lenient government attitude toward the sector.

Opposition to Buterin's statements came from Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

"My first goal has always been to keep government completely out of crypto. Where that is not possible, the choice is clear. If they want a CBDC, sue non-custodial wallets, systematically imprison Crypto leaders, call everyone a security and bully and..." - Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) July 17, 2024

According to Hoskinson, the industry is clearly becoming "bullied and harassed" by the current U.S. government. Hoskinson further stated that politicians would only change their attitudes if they lose elections.

"A vote for Biden is a vote for the death of the U.S. crypto industry. Be a Single Issue in 2024. Vote for pro-crypto candidates", the Cardano founder went on to say.
