News - Is Donald Trump committed to Bitcoin?
Donald Trump is trying to win votes for the presidential election in November. He is also likely trying to win over young voters with conciliatory tones about Bitcoin.
"A lot of people use Bitcoin and frankly it has taken on a life of its own," Trump said in a interview on Fox News. It "probably needs some regulation, but a lot of people are embracing it." He is meeting more and more people "who want to pay with Bitcoin, and that's interesting. So I can live with it either way".
The main currency for him, however, remains the U.S. dollar - for which he received thunderous applause. His apparent reversal could have tactical reasons.
During his term as US president, the 77-year-old said, "I am not a big fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money and whose value is highly volatile and based only on hot air."
He also reportedly directed his Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to "go after Bitcoin."
