Metaplanet plans to buy more Bitcoin

Metaplanet is planning yet more Bitcoin purchases, this time totaling one billion yen (the equivalent of US$6.26 million). This was revealed in a statement issued today, June 24. According to the statement, the Japanese investment company plans to issue new bonds for the same amount to finance the purchases.

With this, Metaplanet continues its Bitcoin accumulation strategy. The company already owns just over 141 BTC. In the wake of the announcement, the company's share price rose more than 12 percent.

Metaplanet is one of a number of global companies buying the digital reserve currency as part of a strategic refocus. This includes NASDAQ-listed healthcare company Semler Scientific, which recently announced Bitcoin purchases totaling $40 million.

In terms of total accumulated holdings, however, MicroStrategy, CEO Michael Saylor's company, remains the undisputed leader in this regard. MicroStrategy recently expanded its own holdings with the purchase of 11,931 BTC for about USD 786 million. The company now owns a total of 226,331 BTC.
