Vitalik Buterin hacked: attackers capture $700,000

Twitter account of Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin hacked: Among the crypto assets stolen are rare CryptoPunk NFTs.

The official X account (formerly Twitter) of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin was hacked last Saturday, Sept. 9.

The incident resulted in the loss of digital assets worth almost $700,000. Among them were NFTs from CryptoPunk.

After gaining control of Buterin's account, the attackers wrote a fraudulent post.

In it, they claimed to be giving away free NFTs to celebrate an upcoming Ethereum update. Through the attached link, the cybercriminals gained control of the wallets of Buterin's unsuspecting followers.

Notably, Ethereum developer BookyPooBah lost two CryptoPunks, #3983 and #1751 - together worth more than 210 ETH - among other NFT losses.

At the time of writing, it is uncertain whether Buterin has restored his account. However, the fraudulent post has already been removed.
