News - Vitalik's proposal: Will soon one Ethereum be enough to staker?
By
Currently, you need 32 Ethereum to staker independently, but Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, wants to change that.
Vitalik suggests lowering this threshold to just one ETH. He wrote this in a recent blog post. The reason behind this proposal is to combat centralization within the Ethereum network. Currently, the 32 ETH required for staking is roughly equivalent to $82,000 at the current exchange rate of $2,600. Since this is too high for many people, many choose to staker their ETH through liquid staking providers such as Lido, where they can add their ETH without owning the full 32 ETH.
The problem with these platforms is that they accumulate so much ETH that they can pose a risk to network decentralization. Lowering the threshold to one ETH would allow more people to strike independently, which would reduce centralization.
Vitalik acknowledged that this could bring new challenges, such as the impact on network speed. Ethereum switched from the Proof-of-Work algorithm to Proof-of-Stake on Sept. 15, 2022, an event known as "The Merge."
