News - WazirX: Hackers want to launder stolen crypto
In the hack of the Indian crypto exchange WazirX, cryptocurrencies worth $230 million were stolen. Now the hackers are trying to disguise the stolen money.
Portions of coins stolen from WazirX wallets have been moved in recent days.
Hackers transferred 5,000 Ether (ETH) to the privacy service Tornado Cash early Thursday morning.
Since Monday, the attackers have moved a total of 15,000 ETH (about $36 million).
According to Arkham Intelligence data, there is still about $50 million in cryptocurrencies on the hackers' wallets.
Tornado Cash is a crypto-mixer on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to perform crypto transactions anonymously by masking transaction details.
In July WazirX became a victim of a hack. The attackers managed to steal a total of $230 million in cryptocurrencies.
Most of the loot consisted of $100 million in Shiba Inu (SHIB) and $52 million in Ether.
The stolen assets represented more than 45% of reported reserves in July 2024. The company subsequently initiated a restructuring process.
WazirX founder Nischal Shetty claims that the security of the funds was the responsibility of Binance.
Binance denies this, "The WazirX team and Nischal Shetty continue to mislead WazirX customers and the market about the relationship between WazirX and Binance," according to a statement. "At no time did Binance own, control or operate WazirX, either before, during or after the July 2024 attack."
It further said, "We call on the WazirX team under Zanmai/Zettai to be accountable to their users and compensate them for the funds lost under the management of Zanmai/Zettai."
According to the company, there are currently 1,475 Bitcoin still on the exchange's wallets.
The hack on WazirX was one of this year's largest crypto hacks. Only the $300 million attack on the Japanese exchange DMM was more lucrative.
