10 cryptocurrencies affected, $870,000 gone: Cuban suspects he downloaded a MetaMask version that "contained some shit."

Mark Cuban has fallen victim to a hacking attack. The star investor reported this confirmed to American media. He is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks and a judge on the TV show "Shark Tank."

The damage amounts to $870,000, spread across ten cryptocurrencies.

The 65-year-old suspects a manipulated MetaMask connection as the cause of the security breach. Hackers repeatedly try to use such dummies to walk new victims into their networks.

"I'm pretty sure I downloaded a version of MetaMask that had some shit in it," Cuban told DL News.

In the end, it could have been worse for the American. According to security firm Arkham Intelligence, at the time of the hack there was also 2.5 million USDC in his Polygon wallet. Cuban managed to move the money to his Coinbase wallet in time.

Overall, the loss should be manageable for the investor. Estimates put Cuban's private assets at just under US$5.2 billion.

Other crypto celebrities have also recently fallen victim to hacking attacks, such as Vitalik Buterin. Unknowns hijacked the X account (formerly Twitter) of the Ethereum co-founder. They posted a phishing link and gained access to their victims' wallet. Their loot: almost $700,000.
